My Messinia

Mali-Spellbound village reposing of the top of the Messinian world

dsc_0121otvSince I moved to Messinia I have heard many times about the village of Mali…it has been pointed out to me from our everyday paths as the mighty mountain where it lies can bee seen from almost anywhere in the Western Messinia. I imagined a little village sitting on a steep mountain top overlooking the olive tree valley and the sea. Last weekend with a great company of my family and a very special family friend we went on a half day excursion towards the Egaleio mountain range accessing it from the side of the city of Fliatra side and passing by the village of Kerasoula on our way.SAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSC

Soon enough soaring with just some turns we found ourselves in a very different scenery: perilous passages ,cyclopic slags and dense forest…At some point we started encountering shepherd dogs with their goat flocks, a sign that the village might be near.SAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSC…And yes soon enough we arrived a setting which was nothing like the road we left behind us…an idyllic highland with springs and pasture openings and a vast village climbing the soft hills around this fertile plateau. No tiny village on a steep mountain!SAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSC Arriving to Mali we have been greeted by a relative of our travel companion who passed her summers in the village and we wondered around numerous abandoned homes and picturesque paths of the village (in its high day the village counted over 1000 inhabitants). One could easily imagine how the village must have been when populated and busy with its everyday shores… the spectral images and sounds just came effortlessly and persistently.    SAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSC We had our simple yet delicious picnic of local goat cheese (Mali is famous for its homemade cheeses),bread ,tomatoes and tsipouro as we sat next to the stone fountain and a tractor on the main square of the village under a gigantic plane tree.SAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSC…a sheer enjoyment between the real and imaginary…SAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSC…and many palatable gifts such as excellent cheeses, fresh oregano and walnuts to take home…SAMSUNG CSC
