Oikos XIII-“Read me like a book” home-Kyparissia

Homes have power to evoke moods and stir desires…some are set for fêtes with friends, other as exotic hide outs…oasis in urban jungles…playgrounds for children…boudoirs…museums…spas…caves…some keep you organized, some make you feel languid…

SAMSUNG CSC Today me and the kids are visiting our dear friends’ Kyparissia home.

An imposing wooden garden gate opens and leads to a cool shadowed patio…good enough…oh yes…beautiful enough for a pause…masterfully stone paved with slabs matched in a nonchalant way.SAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSC Yet I need to proceed…so I do…entering a very spacious hallway…a lobby indeed…high-ceiling and sunlit…SAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCOn the left side an open parlor invites to dwelling….and the doors behind it lead to a secluded office space…to a yet another beautifully set room. This is a moment in which I understand that this particular home evokes, at least in me, a longing for study and lecture… SAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCBy now, I am ready to exchange my camera for a book and to read…as I am sipping homemade lemonade…prepared by my gracious hosts…

Just let me read…get me a book!!!Oh here is one or two!…The kids are already on their way to the mysterious garden cascading with shrouded spots among lush vegetation and stone built passages.SAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCThe house, which has been built relatively recently, tricks you into believing that it has been posing majestically on the slopes of the Old City of Kyparissia for a few centuries…SAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCIt is so well integrated with the surroundings…in size, shape, materials, surfaces, details and colors.

The interiors are very harmonious yet at a closer examination there has been a seamless marriage of elements taken from two styles…Greek neoclassical and English Cottage.SAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCNow it explains why soon after I entered the house my thoughts navigated to a Bloomsbury Group “dimension”, to Virginia Wolf, to Vanessa Bell, E.M Forster etc…

Thoughts which, at first, seemed weird…quite irrelevant to what my eyes were gazing at through the windows of the house: the azure Hellenic skies and the sea beyond the harbor of Kyparissia.SAMSUNG CSCSAMSUNG CSCBut now as I find luring nooks at the house and at the garden I know that I could happily spend hours here on conversing and above all on reading…reading Greek contemporary classics: M. Karagatsis, Kosmas Politis, Nikos Kazanzakis, Nikos Gkatsos, Giorgos Byzinos, Nikos Engonopoulos, Alxandros Papadiamantis, Odysseas Elitis, K.P. Cavafy, Mihalis Gkanas, Dimitris Chatzis…and so many other unmentioned here inspiring Greek writers and poets…and yes, some Virginia Wolf too …SAMSUNG CSC(…and wishing so for this extensive lecture has just become a question of time and not of space).

I would love to hear from you!
